Verna E. Scandrett Private graveside service set for June 25.

Verna E. Scandrett of Ames passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Riverside Manor in Ames, Iowa.  A gathering time visitation will be 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday June 24, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way in Ames, with a Private Graveside service Monday June 25, 2012 at Ames Municipal Cemetery in Ames.

Verna was born October 6, 1928 in Marble Rock, Iowa the daughter of Thomas and Lyla (Losee) Lines.  She graduated from Marble Rock High School.  She married Gaylord Scandrett July 27, 1946 in Marble Rock. The couple farmed in Floyd County before moving to Ames in 1957.  She worked in Food Service at Ames High School for 28 years before she retired and was well known for her custom made wedding cakes.  She and her family attended Campus Baptist Church now known as CrossRoad Baptist Church in Ames.

Verna is survived by her husband, Gaylord of Ames and their sons, David of Des Moines, Lyle (Pam) of Ames, and Donald (Heidi) of Des Moines 8 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and a brother Galen Lines of Brooklyn, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings.

Paul Gammon service set for June 22

Paul Gammon, 89, of Ames, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Paul was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Ames to James and Goldie (Smith) Gammon. He married Louise Moore on July 14, 1960, in Omaha, Neb. Paul served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked 27 years as a firefighter for the city of Ames, retiring as captain. Paul enjoyed carpentry work, cooking and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Louise, of Ames; one son, Carey (LaVonne) Gammon, of Ames; one daughter, Cindy (Steve) Capellen, of Boone; two grandchildren, Chad (Lisa) and Kirk (Kim) Gammon; and five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Laurel, Hailey, Grant and Cole.     

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Frank; and two sisters, Marjorie McKenna and Maxine Chentland.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, at The Plex, 5501 George Washington Carver Ave. in Ames. Private burial of cremated remains will be in Story Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Ames.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ames, MICA, Food Pantry, 230 SE 16th St., Ames, IA 50010.

Memorial services of Iowa in Ankeny is assisting the family.

 

Elizabeth Meller service held yesterday in Colo

 

COLO- Elizabeth Meller, 77, of Colo, Iowa, died Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Elizabeth was born May 26, 1935 in Reid, Austria, the daughter of Mathias and Elisabeth (Schmidt) Schibinger.  She attended school in Austria and came to the United States in 1952.  She was united in marriage to Edward Meller on December 14, 1958 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Elizabeth and Edward lived in Piscataway, NJ for 46 years prior to moving to Colo, Iowa seven years ago.  Elizabeth was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo, the B.F. and T. Club and volunteered at St. Mary’s clothing shares.  Elizabeth loved gardening, flowers and her kitties.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Edward, of Colo, IA; her son: Robert (Edythe) Meller of Colo, IA; her grandson: Bobby Meller; two brothers: Mathias Schibinger of Gilbertsville, PA, John Schibinger of East Brunswick, NJ; and her sister: Cathy Coffaro of New Brunswick, NJ.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Linda.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo.  Interment will be at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery at Piscataway, NJ.

Visitation will be 6:30 – 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, IA.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in memory of Elizabeth.

The Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
