Local Occupy group spreads the word about mortgage settlement

(Feb. 11, 2012 – 11:30 a.m.) Occupy Ames and Occupy Iowa volunteers are helping the Iowa Attorney General’s office reach homeowners who could benefit from the national $25 billion mortgage settlement announced Thursday.

 

Iowa will receive $40, 235, 321 million of the settlement, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced Feb. 9.

(Jan. 9, 2012) Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. (MICA) is currently accepting applications for the agency’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

LIHEAP provides a one-time payment to help pay a household’s heating costs. To be eligible for assistance, individuals must earn 150 percent or less of federal poverty guidelines. For example, an individual can earn no more than $16,335 annually to be eligible. A family of four could not earn more than $33,525. However, individuals who do not meet income requirements may be able to qualify with a medical hardship exception.

(Nov. 22, 2011) A self-guided walking tour guide booklet is now available for the Old Town Historic District, Ames, IA. Located north of Main Street between 7th and 9th Streets and Duff and Clark Avenues, the district encompasses about twelve (12) city blocks. The brochure contains over 30 color photos, a glossary, map and suggested walking route. The brochure was developed by the Historic Old Town Neighborhood Association (HOTNA) with financial support from the community grant program of the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau and the HOTNA.
