Illegal drugs available locally are getting more potent

(March 9, 2010 – 11 a.m.) Local drug enforcement agents are noting an increase in the potency of some illegal drugs available in the Story County area.

“People think marijuana is a safe drug and you can’t get into trouble using it,” an undercover narcotics officer with the Central Iowa Drug Task Force told the Story County Juvenile Justice Committee on Monday.

“But that is not true. In the last year, we have started to hear of overdoses from smoking marijuana. We’ve never heard of that before. The problem is that the marijuana coming from Canada through Minnesota or being grown in Colorado has a very high concentration of the active ingredient THC.

(March 5, 2010 - 10:30 a.m.) At the headquarters at Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa in Des Moines last week, there were several big boxes containing huge piles of computer monitors, printers, and cell phones in the storage area. One of them was labeled “E-Waste, Urbandale store.”

Dave Parr, the operations director of Goodwill’s E-Waste [electronic waste] Program, pointed it out and said, “This box comes from the Urbandale store. It weighs around 300 pounds. Those bigger ones probably weigh 400 to 500 pounds. The store collects donated computers and related products and then puts them into big boxes. Once the boxes are full, they will be brought back to here. ”

Legislators debate fair share legislation

By Mike Malloy

AmesNewsOnline

(Feb. 26, 2010 - 4:15 p.m.) Four local legislators discussed House Study Bill 702, also known as “fair share,” Friday at a Chamber of Commerce event.

If the bill passes, non-union members would be required to pay a fee for services provided, such as arbitration representation, by the union. This would only apply to executive branch government employees, and would not include positions like public school teachers or any worker in private business. A larger-scale version of the proposal failed to pass last year.
