Press Release

(Sept. 21, 2009 – 4 p.m.) Today Sauer-Danfoss announced to its employees their intent to close the manufacturing plant in Lawrence, Kansas by the end of the second quarter 2010. There are approximately 100 employees in the Lawrence facility today.

As a manufacturing facility for the Work Function Division and Open Circuit Business Unit, the majority of the Lawrence business will be transferred to Sauer-Danfoss facilities in Ames, Iowa and Freeport, Illinois. Some job transfer opportunities will be available at the Ames and Freeport Sauer-Danfoss locations for those Lawrence employees open to relocation.

“The downturn in the economy has taken a tremendous toll on our business and our employees in Sauer-Danfoss worldwide – resulting in nearly a 50% loss in sales and nearly 40% reduction of employees,” explains HR Director for the Americas, Matt Bendler. “With regard to the Lawrence facility, we have decided to stop production and will be consolidating operations into our Ames, Iowa and Freeport, Illinois facilities to utilize existing floor space and capacity.”

The Sauer-Danfoss plant in Lawrence was established in 1997 when a new manufacturing facility was built to produce hydrostatic transmissions. The facility currently machines and manufactures several components and final products for the motors and open circuit businesses within Sauer-Danfoss.

“From a business perspective we understand why these changes are necessary,” explains local plant manager Jaime Bryant. “On a very personal level, however, the closure of this plant is tough to take. Our Lawrence team has accomplished a tremendous amount in the 12 years we have been here – and they should all be proud of what we have achieved.  We will work closely with the Lawrence employees, their families and the community during this significant and very difficult change.”
