Study shows uncertain future for convention business in Ames

(March 8, 2010 - 6:30 a.m.) Does the convention business have a viable future in Ames?

A recent study shows promise, but also gives pause.

The Iowa State Center, a destination for groups the past 40 years, is showing its age, especially relative to a variety of new convention halls built around the state in the past few years. Revenue from conventions and meetings is flagging, and the Iowa State Center will need improvements if that trend is to be reversed.

“At some point as a community we have to decide if we want to be a conference destination or not,” Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau director Julie Weeks said.

(March 5, 2010 - 10:30 a.m.) At the headquarters at Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa in Des Moines last week, there were several big boxes containing huge piles of computer monitors, printers, and cell phones in the storage area. One of them was labeled “E-Waste, Urbandale store.”

Dave Parr, the operations director of Goodwill’s E-Waste [electronic waste] Program, pointed it out and said, “This box comes from the Urbandale store. It weighs around 300 pounds. Those bigger ones probably weigh 400 to 500 pounds. The store collects donated computers and related products and then puts them into big boxes. Once the boxes are full, they will be brought back to here. ”
