Thirty-one.

That’s the number of teaching positions eliminated next year under the first publicly announced proposal from the Ames School District.

Interim superintendent Tim Taylor unveiled the plan at a budget advisory committee meeting Tuesday. It seeks a reduction of about $3.5 million for next school year – an unprecedented cut, Taylor said.

“I’ve been here 20 years and I can remember $2 million, and that’s when we closed two elementary schools,” Taylor said.

(UPDATED March 9, 2010 – 8:30 a.m.)No child likes to stay after school, but for two weeks in April that’s what every Ames student will do.

The Ames School Board decided to add 33 minutes to each school day between Apr. 5 and Apr. 16. That will make up for one of the five days lost so far this school year because of weather. The remaining four days will be added to the end of the school year. The final day, barring additional snow days, will be Friday, June 4.

The plan is subject to teacher’s union approval.
