(March 10, 2010 – 7:30 a.m.)The City of Ames will be submitting an application to be a test market for a high-speed fiber optic network offered by the Internet company Google.  The “request for information” is due March 26, and the City continues to garner community support for the application.

'Mortar Matters' offers day of buildng preservation discussions

(March 9, 2010) Stabilizing and preserving historic masonry buildings is the focus of “Mortar Matters,” an all-day workshop to be held in Ames on Friday, March 26.  Property owners, contractors, architects, and preservationists are invited to attend and learn from experts about maintaining these structures.  A repeat of the same workshop has been scheduled for Mount Vernon on Saturday, March 27.  Both workshops will last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

City to remove trees in Brookside Park

(March 8, 2010 - 6:30 a.m.)  The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department began implementing its forest management program in Brookside Park last week. After an arborist studied more than 500 trees in the 82-acre park, a plan was developed to remove nearly 70 hazardous trees and create a tree-replacement schedule.

Hazardous trees are defined as defective trees, or trees with parts that pose a high risk to injure people or damage property.
